After the war, Joseph bought a 40 acre farm in Centralia, Illinois.
His first wife was Malinda Bennett. They were married in December 1850. They had five children: Frances Elizabeth, born 10 October 1853; Levinia Ann Adaline, born 19 April 1856, died 23 January 1859; Martha, born 8 August 1859, died 12 November 1865; William Allen, born 3 March 1862, died 16 August 1863; and Wanda Ann, born 15 September 1863, died 20 October 1863.
After the death of Malinda on 5 January 1864, Joseph married Celia Ann Gossett on 5 November 1864 in Centralia, Illinois. Celia had been Malinda's nurse during her illness for several years. They had seven children: James Lafayette, born 16 February 1861, died 30 December 1938; John Allen, born 23 September 1865; Henry Franklin, born 9 March 1868, died 5 April 1943; Nancy Ann, born 12 December 1871, died 19 January 1956; Emma L., born 14 April 1876, died 1953; Cora L., born 11 April 1880, died 1948; and Charles W., born 5 August 1885, died 19 April 1950.
Joseph Chapman died 14 July 1887 and is buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, eight miles north of Mt. Vernon, IL.
Celia died in 1911.
