Notes: Jude Hamilton Shurtleff was born near Buffalo, NY on January 6, 1834 and was the third child of Chester Ballew Shurtleff and Miranda Adams. He enlisted October 9, 1861 in Company A, 57th IL Inf. in Mendota, IL and was mustered into service December 26, 1861 in Chicago, IL and was an engineer by trade. After the war, Jude returned to IL, married Mary Jane Wyrick on December 23, 1866, and emigrated to Vermillion, SD in 1870. He also lived in Yankton and Parker. He had a mail and passenger stageline from Yankton to Sioux Falls and was a county commissioner. His children were: William Arthur, born October 7, 1867 in Mendota, IL; Julia Imus, born October 12, 1868 in Mendota, IL; and Sidney Hamilton, born December 19, 1876 in Hurley, SD. He died in Parker, SD on June 30, 1924. The funeral was on July 3rd with the local Grand Army of the Republic as the Honor Guard and Sons of Union Veterans as pallbearers. The services were conducted by his son, Sidney Hamilton. Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery, Parker, SD.Buried: Rosehill Cemetery, Parker, SD
