Notes: James Madison Neal was mustered out of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV on March 1, 1864 at Memphis, Tennessee. He decided to reenlist in the Union Army but while on his way back to enlist for a second term, he was ambushed and killed by Confederate soldiers on August 20, 1864, near Savannah, Tennessee.
