Notes:
On daily duty as teamster.
William H. Mitchell was the son of James and Melinda South Mitchell who originally moved to Alabama from Laurens County, SC and appeared on the 1840 St. Clair census. The family then moved to Marion County, AL by 1850. James was the son of John and Anna Mitchell of Laurens Co., SC. According to a book, "Genealogical Notes on the South Family", written by Mrs. Christine Gee, Melinda's grandparents were William South and Catherine Daniel.
William and his brothers, John and Francis Marion Mitchell, all served in the 1st AL Cav. Union army. His Declaration for an Original Invalid Pension stated that while in the service and in the line of duty he was a teamster and while in a retreat from Yellow Creek, MS, his team became frightened and ran away. He, in attempting to stop them, was injured in his right leg. An affidavit states William's first wife was Louisa.
